mid century san diego.

recently I headed up the 805 and over to the 52 to check out some mid century homes designed by dan palmer and william krisel in the early 60s. it was an interesting mix of homes that had maintained the flavor of the era and others that had gone high and right with the original forms.

i should go back and document the bastardizations of some of the other homes later.

my soundtrack? My lovely daughter aurora. the girl chatted endlessly with me and walked barefoot through the neighborhoods as i played photographer:)

coloring pages.

Here are 3 sharpie drawings I did a while back, maybe a year ago.

I liked the feel of the marker over the smooth printer paper.

They could be the beginning of a funky coloring book... or not.

I have no idea where the original drawings are.

return to sender.

The pages above are from a sketchbook I dug out of storage today while looking for an even older one. I'm glad I found it. The sketchbook was to be a back and forth between me and my friend Anthony. We made it two complete rounds and then it stalled with me... for 12 years.

Time to mail this sucker back:)

My entries, both written and drawn, document the end of the east coast and the beginning of the west coast for me, for us.

The first page, ah, that first page. I love it. Out of the dark and into the light. Thank you Carrie.

The second page comes from the same drive as the first, drawn at 70 mph.

The rest of the drawings... our first apartment in san diego. good ol' kansas street in the north park neighborhood.

Making our way with thrift store finds, dollar store flatware, and the occasional use of a courtyard chair or two when we had company.

in the neighborhood (and not so much)

Running the bases with the boy at the ballpark down the street.
Walking to pick up the boy from school, accompanied by the girl.
Desert blooms and cactus giants from one of my favorite places in san diego, the cactus garden at balboa park.

The soundtrack- huffing and puffing along with the crunch of infield dirt. The girl talking my ear off:) Jet planes, the buzzing of hummingbirds, and a variety of spoken languages at the garden.

wintering in socal.

A few photos from xmas and into the first week of January. The soundtrack consisted of laughter of family and friends, waves crashing, asphalt crunching, and mall muzak.
