drawing with the kiddos.

it's winter break!
time to step it up with the drawing.
taking a break from the mid century drawings and tapping into my love of pattern and decoration for something different.

we recently got a vintage trailer to use as an art studio in the backyard. a 1960 kenskill camper. super sweet:)
on xmas eve I started collaborating with my kids on some drawings. They each add a few things of their choosing and then I come in and mess it all up;)

9 done so far. I'd love to get a series of 10 done by the end of the week.

a number of the backgrounds i am adding are coming from pattern heavy drawings in the new sketchbook i have been working in since the end of september.

the new head and the heart recording on heavy rotation, plus the shovels and rope pandora station.

a bit cleaner.

Here are some shots of the mid century series that are a bit more in focus.

These drawings are based on photos that I have taken in the past year. Some of the buildings are well known, others are not. They are juxtaposed with skies filled with clouds based on observation and imagination. The contrast of permanent and transient structures and marks has been a recurring theme in my work for many years.

They are all 12x18".

They are all available for purchase. Contact me at dmasse71@gmail.com if you are interested:)

20.

this one makes 20. it's been a little while since i broke out the charcoal. i had taken some photos of buildings around here, but nothing spoke to me.

this past weekend we went to jon and karen's to celebrate his 40th. we got out of the car, and this angle caught my eye while walking to their front door:)

the 4spot is also where my 60' long pool mural is.

2 more.

took a field trip with the kids to check out bell beach pavilion at low tide. fun trip. the boy had to poop as soon as we got to the spot. Ended up holding it for at least 3 more hours:/

on one of our furlough days, i checked out a few buildings in fletcher hills. the library was the highlight of the day. also stopped by a couple churches and 972 wakefield.

on pandora- local natives, maps and atlases, dawes, and lumineers stations.

watched meatballs, under the dome, bob's burgers.

modernsandiego has been a great resource for this series. addresses all over san diego county.

running out of room on the wall. though done, 18 is not up on wall yet. looking for 20 before heading back east...

back at it.

this is the first of 2 drawings i have worked on this week. after a few weeks off, being busy with my classroom, it feels good to push around some charcoal and chalk again:)

live sets in the background by maps and atlases, shins, iron and wine, and the lumineers.
